Running alignment - Left hip drop side bends the spine

See the Problem:
  • This is LEFT Hip Drop
  • The runner is standing on the right foot
  • The RIGHT hip muscle (Gluteus Medius) fails to control the pelvis in a level position
  • In response to this lack of control the LEFT hip is seen to drop
 

 

  • In response to inadequate contol from Gluteus Medius and the resultant hip drop:
  • Over dependence and tightening of the Ilio Tibial Band (ITB)
  • Inward rolling of the knee and foot
  • Knee joint line, patella and tendon pain
  • Sideways distortion and irritation of the spine
  • Asymetrical arm swing
  • Difficulty achieving heel strike
  • Legs feel heavy

What to do:

  • Re-establish good control of the lumbar corset (Transverse Abdominus and Lumbar Multifidus)
  • Train Gluteus Medius on this stable "chassis"
  • Ensure heel strike is achieved
  • Start with walking and build up to running
